GVNA HealthCare, Inc. offers Adult Day Health Services in Gardner, Athol, Fitchburg and Greenfield. According to Kathy Kilhart, RN, BSN, MSN, Elder Services Director. GVNA opened its first Center in 1984 in Gardner. “After we opened our first center, the adult day healthcare industry grew and became recognized as an intricate part of the healthcare delivery system,” said Kilhart. “With this growth happening and the need clearly identified, the GVNA opened its second center in Fitchburg in 1987, the third in the North Quabbin area in 1993 and the fourth in Greenfield in 2011,” she said. The centers are all certified by the Department of Public Health.
Kilhart noted that many people are not aware of what Adult Day Health Services are and how our centers can help alleviate worries family members have about the care of their loved one. “GVNA’s centers are designed to meet the physical, functional and social needs of elderly and disabled adults who are unable to live independently,” said Kilhart. “Our centers and staff can provide for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia and/or medical needs, as well as those seeking socialization,” she said. “Our professional team assures that attendees’ physical, social, nutritional and emotional needs are met,” she added. “The team consists of a nurse, activity coordinator, social worker, nutritionist and nursing assistants,” said Kilhart
“The benefits of having an adult day health center available to area residents is enormous,” Kilhart noted.
GVNA’s centers provide participants with:
- Medical oversight to manage chronic care diseases; such as, Diabetes, CHF and COPD
- Ongoing health assessment, including blood pressure monitoring
- Medication management
- An alternative to nursing home placement or social isolation
- Daily supervision
- Proper nutrition
- A friendly, therapeutic and safe environment
- Personal care
- Daily exercise
- Promotes and maintains independence
Kilhart added that anyone who is interested in visiting any of our centers on a day that is convenient for them and their loved one is more than welcome to call for an appointment. “It gives us the opportunity to show participants, first-hand, the benefits of sending your loved one to an Adult Day Health Center,” she said.
Kilhart explained how attending an Adult Day Health program is a cost-effective alternative, providing quality care for less than $10 an hour. “GVNA’s centers in Gardner and Fitchburg also have contracts with the VA, which means that veterans who have a doctor through the VA system, may have 2 or 3 days of adult day health provided for free,” she noted. “In addition, MassHealth covers the cost of adult day health for those who meet the eligibility criteria,” said Kilhart.
“The benefit for caregivers is that with the support of our Adult Day Health Center’s, you can balance your caregiving role with time to care for yourself, and have time for other obligations and interests,” said Kilhart. “We cannot replace the care that only you can give, but we can certainly help relieve some of your stress,” she added.
